SHINE 2003 Student Day Report

The basic set up for the SHINE 2003 Student Day was for 6 students to speak about topics that they knew something about. Unfortunately, there were no students in one of the groups, so scientist Rick Leske gave a brief tutorial. The presentations lasted from 8:30 to just past 12:00 and are listed below:

Student Presentations:
Kathy Reeves (WG1)– Flares
Ben Lynch (WG2) — Magnetic clouds and intro to CME theory
Alysha Reinard (WG2)– Heat dropouts and CSE
Angie Richards (WG1)– Solar wind composition
Elena Moise (WG2)– Particle acceleration at CME and CIR driven shocks with accent on pick up ion acceleration
Christina Lee (WG1)–What is an energetic particle and why do we care?
Scientist Richard Leske (WG3)– SEPs and WG3 in general.

The talks were very informative and many students commented that this helped them get up to speed on the different and varied topics at the conference. I received thanks from some of the student speakers that this had helped them understand what they spoke on better.

One thing that was not planed on was the exceptional level of bonding among the students. There were complaints of the little student-professor bonding, but this was made up for by the comradeship built up between the students. There was an official student day activity to see the Iao valley, but there were also numerous little get-togethers that this helped spawn. In retrospect, having a scientist tutorial was excellent, and comments
were made to the effect that it would be nice next year if the tutorial went longer.
As it was, we had to cut Richard Leske short due to time constraints.
