SHINE 1998

SHINE held a special session during the Solar Wind 9 conference.

The Solar Wind Nine (SW9) conference was held in Nantucket, Massachusetts, from October 5-9, 1998.

Using solar inputs to enhance the performance of L1 models for forecasting geoeffective magnetic clouds

During the Solar Wind 9 Meeting, SHINE hosted a special session devoted to exploring ways to enhance the reliability of operational models for forecasting the arrival of geoeffective magnetic clouds at Earth. Our goal was to discuss how to better use solar activity inputs to improve magnetic cloud monitoring and forecasting algorithms which key upon L1 in situ observations. Several specific geoeffective events were discussed as illustrative examples. Introductory speakers briefly reviewed the status of pertinent solar observations and data, of L1 WIND and ACE monitoring programs, and of magnetic storm prediction. This was followed by an open discussion of these issues. The session was intended to be informal yet focused on this important topic of Space Weather research.
